Leadership Development

Camp provides opportunities to take responsibility while leading campers as well as other staff. We prioritize your growth through two weeks of staff training — one more week than most other camps in Ontario.

LEADING CAMPERS

Activity Leader

Activity Leaders instruct our incredible activities. They are trained in specific skills and facilitate safe fun every day by implementing lesson plans in an engaging way. Activity Leaders are responsible for setting up and taking down equipment and adhering to safety guidelines. They also assist Cabin Leaders during meal times and overnight.

Cabin Leader

Cabin Leaders are spiritual and emotional mentors for campers. They provide the best possible experiences by building great relationships with those in their care. These staff members lead cabin devotions, participate in amazing program games, and help campers achieve "personal bests" during activities.

Grasshopper Leader

Enterprise Small Group Leader

Enterprise Small Group Leaders play a critical role in the leadership development of our 15-year-old campers. They support these teens through mentorship, teaching, and connecting on a personal level. This is displayed through servant hearts as they clean dishes, set up for meals, and tackle projects around the facility with their campers.

Leaders In Training (LIT) Small Group Leader

LIT Small Group Leaders act as spiritual mentors and take an active role in the leadership development of our 16-year-old campers. These leaders build relationships through intentional conversations, leading Bible studies, and serving alongside LITs during their practical experience week.

LEADING STAFF

Activity Head

Day Camp & Grasshopper Head

The Day Camp & Grasshopper Head oversees the two non-overnight programs offered by Mini-Yo-We. Under the supervision of the Junior Camp Directors, this role facilitates the check-in and check-out process of both programs. It also oversees the Grasshopper leaders and serves by caring for and discipling them.

Program & Ministry Head

A small team of Program & Ministry Heads works in each of our core programs. Program & Ministry Heads spend time before the summer planning creative themes, fun games, and engaging Bible teaching. At Camp, they play wacky characters and spend a lot of time being in front of their site ensuring things run smoothly.

Section Head

Section Heads serve by caring for and discipling the Cabin Leaders in their section. They support these leaders through 1-on-1 conversations, prayer, and helping solve problems as they arise. Section Heads ensure campers are safe, have fun, and experience the love of Jesus through our Cabin Leaders.

Waterfront Head

Waterfront Heads are responsible for the physical care of the waterfront area at their site. They make lifeguard schedules, oversee waterfront time and facilitate the missing person drill under the supervision of their Directors. When there are no waterfront responsibilities, they assist the Program team at their site. Waterfront Heads must be at least 18 years old and have 250 hours of relevant experience.

LEADING SYSTEMS

Out-Tripping Head

The Out-Tripping Head oversees and coordinates all canoe trips throughout the summer. This includes our Voyageur, Explorer, LIT, and Northwoods canoe trips. This role is also responsible for keeping the equipment and the out-tripping shed clean and organized. The Out-Tripping Head requires excellent time management and the ability to work independently.

Worship & Tech Head

The Worship & Tech Head works with the musical worship teams in each program. This person ensures equipment is where it needs to be and plans are made well in advance. This role will help with song selection, key selection, and ultimately will work to develop musicianship and worship-leading skills in our staff.

OPERATIONS

Administrative Team

The Administrative team focuses on the customer service experience, including interacting with camper parents, staff, and guests over email, phone, and in person. Primary tasks include registering campers, managing family accounts, answering phone calls, responding to emails and inquiries, and various administrative tasks for other teams.

Camp Store Team

Dietary Specialist

In May and June, this role helps prepare meals for our staff and guest groups while becoming familiar with our kitchens, systems, recipes, and approach to special diets and allergies. In July and August, we run three kitchens to support 400-500 campers, staff, and volunteers each week. During the summer, this role serves individuals with special dietary needs. This involves communicating with the parents of campers, meal planning, and preparing and delivering meals. Dietary Specialists also assist volunteers in preparing meals for guests without dietary needs.

Facility Team

Facility team members help maintain the sites and remove distractions to improve the experience of the campers, staff, and guests on property. Tasks include cleaning accommodations and washrooms, collecting garbage, groundskeeping, and projects that match each team member's skills and abilities.

Nursing Student

As a member of the Medical team, this role helps provide the best possible care for our campers, staff, and volunteers. This person supports the volunteers on our Medical team by providing consistency from week to week, weekend relief, and expertise in Camp’s medical database, policies, and procedures. Ideal candidates include nursing students on a medical career path.

Need-To-Know Details

Dates

Our summer programs run during July and August. The Dates & Rates web page lists when each program is offered this summer.

Training

All staff members participate in our on-site training sessions, which start in the last week of June. Some roles also take part in additional lead team training.

Time Off

Summer staff receive daily time off as well as one day off each week. For most teams, this runs from Saturday around 11:00 AM to Sunday at 9:00 AM.

Honorarium

Staff members who serve for at least 4 weeks receive a weekly honorarium between $220 and $425, plus room and board

Minimum Age

We require all summer staff to be at least 17 years old by December 31 or to be part of our Leaders in Training program.

Yes! There are two opportunities for summer staff who want to continue serving at Camp:

Fall Crew - Stay on for a few days after Summer's End and help "shut down" for the season by putting away program equipment, tidying up seasonal buildings and much more.

Internship - The Camp Mini-Yo-We Internship is an opportunity for young adults to live and serve in intentional community. The program begins in August and runs for 12 months. Click to find out more!

After your contract is signed and sent to summerstaff@miniyowe.com, you will receive an email with details about the paperwork and training required to serve at Camp, such as:

Criminal Record Check - Camp Mini-Yo-We is committed to providing a safe environment for our campers. We take the hiring of our staff very seriously, which includes collecting criminal record checks for anyone age 18 or older when they serve in the summer. For staff born before 1986, we require a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC). Record checks are valid for five years. Our team will send you instructions if you need to provide a record check for this upcoming summer.

Direct Deposit Information - All staff who work at Camp Mini-Yo-We for four or more weeks in the summer qualify for an honorarium. There is no need to apply. The amount will be listed on your contract. To be paid, direct deposit banking details must be provided in your staff account. Returning staff should inform us if there are any changes to the information we have on file for them.

TD1 & TD1ON Forms - If your honorarium for the summer is more than $500, we will collect TD1 and TD1ON forms from you. If you served with us in the past two years, you do not need to provide new forms.

Medical Form - Complete this form online in your staff account.

Under 18 Permission Form - Staff who are younger than 18 years old need permission from their parents/guardians to leave the property on their time off. Access the form here.

Training Modules - All staff must watch the following training modules, which are specific to Camp Mini-Yo-We: Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities (AODA); Ontario Workplace Health and Safety; and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS). Certificates are supplied at the end of each video.

Yes! We partner with a local laundry service that will wash, dry and fold your laundry every week. Staff are required to pay for this service. The details are below:

If you use the laundry service, we provide you with a free numbered bag to use throughout the summer. It can be kept upon leaving.
Staff drop off laundry on Saturdays and pick it up on Sundays. Laundry is done off-site by a third-party company, which tracks how many times each bag is used.
Laundry is $17.50 per load.
Staff who receive an honorarium will have their laundry fees deducted from their final pay at the end of the summer.
Staff who are not receiving an honorarium will receive an invoice from Camp. Payment will be due at the end of your service time and can be paid at the office or by e-transfer to accountsreceivable@miniyowe.com using the password Laundry2022.
