Why Summer Staff Keep Returning to Camp Mini-Yo-We

Anna TempleSummer Staff

The summer team at Camp Mini-Yo-We is an incredible mix of newcomers and returning staff members. This past summer, we had about a 50/50 split between those who were on staff for the first time and those who were returning. This balance brings fresh perspectives while preserving the traditions that make Camp feel like home. With this mix, we’re continually encouraged to think about what we want to keep and what we want to improve. The reasons why so many staff members return year after year are often the same reasons why new staff choose to join us—an environment rich in community, growth, and faith. Camp Mini-Yo-We offers a space for personal transformation and the formation of lifelong bonds.

A Shared Purpose and Faith

For many staff members, Camp Mini-Yo-We is a place of shared purpose and faith. Angel, a first-time staff member in 2024, shares that the people and the environment make her eager to return for Summer 2025. “Everyone there has gone for the same reasons—to grow and flourish in their faith and to meet other people with the same goals,” she says. It’s an environment where young people can connect, challenge, and encourage one another as they deepen their faith and grow together.

Faith guides everything at Mini-Yo-We—from staff interactions to the activities planned for campers. Angel reflects on the joy of seeing campers engaged in programs crafted with care. “It’s really cool seeing that the campers enjoy it and talk about all their favourite things that happen in a day once they get back to the cabins,” she says.

A Supportive, Intentional Community

Camp Mini-Yo-We’s community is known for its support and intentionality. Olivia, a staff member of four years, describes her experience with the team as “intentional, supportive, and Godly”. From her first day, she knew she had found something special. Olivia recalls one day when members of Spring Crew were asked if they could help a neighbouring cottage install a dock. “They thought no one would volunteer, but so many hands shot up in the air!” she remembers. It was a moment that highlighted Camp’s servant-hearted culture, where helping others comes naturally and support is always close by.

Friendships That Stand the Test of Time

Ask any returning staff member what they value most and one word comes up again and again: friends. Avery highlights that it’s the friendships she has formed at Mini-Yo-We that keep her coming back each summer. “Camp gives us friendships that, even if we don’t see each other for a while, when we see each other again, it’s like time hasn’t passed,” she says. Whether it’s gathering for games, working through challenges as a team, or sharing a quiet sunrise, these friendships are profound and enduring.

Nature’s Beauty and Unforgettable Moments

A summer at Camp Mini-Yo-We means creating unforgettable moments while being surrounded by Muskoka’s breathtaking scenery. Hannah, a returning staff member and intern, says it’s hard to pick a single favourite memory, but watching sunsets on the lake with friends stands out. “You truly make lifelong friends at Camp,” she says, adding that the beauty of Mary Lake and shared experiences make each moment special.

Reuben, another returning staff member, shares his excitement about delving deeper into nature and God’s creation this summer. He looks forward to sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for the wilderness with campers and staff alike, embracing each opportunity to grow.

Growth Through New Challenges and Rewards

Every summer brings new challenges and rewards that encourage staff members to grow personally and professionally. Isaac, hoping for another fun and rewarding summer, shares that each year brings something fresh—new people, new programs, and new ways to build on the past year’s experiences. Staff at Camp Mini-Yo-We are here not just for a job but for an experience that shapes their future, develops new skills, and deepens their faith.
