Building a Home Away From Home: Transforming Bunkie Row at Camp Mini-Yo-We

Rich BirchChristmas Campaign

Every structure tells a story at Camp Mini-Yo-We – and Bunkie Row is no exception. Nestled in the heart of Girls Camp, Bunkies 5, 6 and 7 are being prepared for future tales. Their transformation is part of our ongoing commitment to the adult volunteers who make our camp a haven for adventure and growth.

The Project Scope

Our goal is to breathe new life into these adult volunteer accommodations. This isn’t just a renovation – it’s a rejuvenation. The project includes installing new exterior siding on Bunkies 5 and 6, refreshing the interiors with new ceilings and wall panelling, updating electrical fixtures and adding ceiling fans for comfort. But it’s not just about the basics. We’re adding character to these spaces through crate design furniture and thoughtful finishings like photos, lamps and mirrors.

The Benefits of Renewal

Reviving these bunkies serves a dual purpose. First, it allows us to reintegrate them into our accommodation grid, increasing our capacity to host adult volunteers. For the last few years, we’ve rarely used these buildings because they were below the standards for what we wanted to provide for our amazing volunteers. This renovation will increase our volunteer capacity for many summers to come! This is great news for our summer programs as we add volunteers to help with premium instructions such as wakeboarding and theatre arts.

Second, it aligns these spaces with the quality of our other adult accommodations, ensuring a consistent and inviting experience for all who contribute their time and energy to Mini-Yo-We. We’ve been radically upgrading accommodations across Camp. Volunteers who have stayed in these upgraded facilities have raved about how great they are – even commenting that it feels like a home away from home!

The Current Stage of Renovation

We’re already on our way to making this vision a reality. The demolition phase is complete, and our team has finished the levelling and structural repairs on Bunkies 5 and 6. The painting of materials is nearing completion, so we’re on track to welcome adult volunteers into these bunkies next summer.

Celebrating Our Volunteers

We truly depend on our adult volunteers. They bring diverse skills, unwavering dedication and a passion for impacting young lives. This project shows our appreciation and recognition of their invaluable role in our community.

Every hour an adult volunteer serves at Mini-Yo-We reduces the cost for campers and guests. They provide critical support so our staff team can focus on working with the young leaders at the centre of our mission.

Your involvement in this project is crucial. With your support, we can create an environment that reflects the warmth and spirit of the Camp community for our adult volunteers.
