A Digital Refresh – April 16, 2020: Growing through it

Camp MYW

Today’s reflection is from Pat. He is the Director of Discovery camp and is the Director of Discipleship.

Today’s Reading: James 1: 1-18

I am not the kind of person to memorize scripture.

But I did once.

It was the passage in James 1:2-4.

I memorized it at a time in my life when I thought there was little left to have hope in. And for whatever reason, this passage was a great comfort to me.

Because I have these verse memorized they return to me regularly and while I have been thinking about discipleship at camp this verse has really been a focus for what we do.

In the passage there is a process of maturing described in a few steps:

Trials
Perseverance
Maturity

There is a pattern here and one that regularly happens in the camp environment:

We are challenged
We push on
We grow

And this pattern isn’t really just exclusive to camp or the Bible. It happens everywhere, and most notably, in great stories:

The hero is called to a new adventure
The hero gets lost in the woods
The hero finds a new path

And so today, we reflect on this pattern I would love to focus in on your own growth and ask:

Where are you on your journey of faith today?
Are you being called to a new adventure?
Are you feeling lost in the woods?
Are you just starting to see the path before you?

For some of us, the answer will be clear and for others, we will have a harder time knowing. Even more so, the truth is that parts of our life and faith might be in all three places at once.

Regardless of where you find yourself take heart and get excited because every step is important.

As James wrote:

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

Your Friend,
Pat

A Digital Refresh is a regular series for the staff at Mini-Yo-We.
When we gather together for worship and learn from God’s word we call it “Refresh.” Even though we aren’t at camp we can still gather together to share God’s word through a Digital Refresh.
