Pre-Trip Information 2011

First of all, where are we going? "Te-mee-ay-gaming, as it was known to the Ojibway, or "Temagami as it is referred to today. Temagami is recognized as one of the country's largest backcountry canoeing regions; with 3,500 kms of lakes, rivers and waterways, and it contains the "rooftop of Ontario - the highest point in all Ontario!
 
This summer we are planning for our Northwoods canoe trippers to be going on an 8 day loop from Martin River, to the town of Temagami, and back around for a total of about 150 km.  This is Route 3 in Hap Willson's guidebook Canoe Routes in Temagami.

Trip Packing List

  • 30L waterproof "dry sack" (30L size only because this is the maximum amount of personal items to be taken on the trip); you can buy one at Camp or get one such as MEC's Ultralight Stuff Sack
  • Closed-toe shoes such as MEC's Keen Newport H2 sandal
  • Flip flops to wear in the evenings around the campsites
  • Small sleeping bag such as the Broadstone 3-pound bag (it will be warm, so the rating does not need to go below 0 degrees; it should be about the size of a soccer ball when rolled up)
  • Therm-a-Rest Prolite 3 or MEC Kelvin 2.5 mattress is optional for comfort (it needs to be one of these two or one of the same size; request a "short" mattress)
  • Medium-quality raincoat (no lightweight ponchos; see tips below)
  • Hard water bottle (you can buy a branded one at Camp)
  • Headlamp such as the Petzl Tikka Plus 2 Headlamp/small flashlight
  • Hat
  • One pair of light pants or jeans
  • Three light shirts
  • One fleece or pullover sweater (not a "hoody")
  • Underwear
  • Two pairs of socks (ideally one wool pair)
  • Pyjamas
  • Sunglasses (an old pair because they may get damaged)
  • Knife is optional
  • Disposable/waterproof camera is optional (we bring a camera that can be used by anyone and then we distribute the pictures to all)


A Few Tips for Trippers

Feet:Bring close-toed shoes with a strap around the heel: no hiking boots or crocs, please. They will be in the water often. It is extremely important to have good footwear that has been broken in before the trip.Wearing flip flops in the evenings will give your feet a rest and help to avoid blisters if your other shoes are wet.

Sun:Hats and a hard water bottle are mandatory. You can get a water bottle when you arrive at Mini-Yo-We. Camp will provide sunscreen in each canoe and we will use it often.

Cotton:"Cotton is rotten" for canoe trips since it takes a long time to dry and is bulky. This is why we prefer no "hoody" sweaters or cotton track pants. Please also avoid large, cotton sleeping bags.

Rain: It will rain at least one day and a good raincoat is essential. It can also be worn in the evenings if it is cool. Rain pants are optional.
