Canoe tripping is a great opportunity to learn about yourself, to develop character, to build friendships and to get closer to God. A canoe trip is a shared adventure: We prepare together, train together, pack together and then travel together. We use known routes and experienced leaders, but in the wilderness you never know what is around the next bend! Or what is at the end of the portage. Or what tomorrows weather will be. We do things we don't usually do and even things we have never done before, such as paddle 15 or 20 km a day, portage a pack or a canoe, cook pizza over a fire, sleep in a tent in a storm or sleep under the stars. As we confront these unknowns together, we learn who we are as individuals. We learn what unique contributions we can make to the team, what our strengths are and where we need to grow. As we work together and depend on each other we build great friendships.
We also have the opportunity to see God's creative handiwork all around us on canoe trips. We have time and stillness to reflect on who He is and the awesome intricacy of the world He has made. Time is set aside to explore Gods purposes for us as revealed in the Bible and in the life of Jesus.
Northwoods canoe routes are typically located in the Temagami or French River regions of Ontario. The actual routes for this year will be selected in July to allow us to consider water levels, weather patterns and the specific experience of the staff and campers.
Basic canoeing experience and competent swimming ability is recommended for this program. Most of the specialized gear required for the trip is provided by Camp Mini-Yo-We. You will be required to provide some specific personal equipment such as a compact sleeping bag, raincoat, etc. View the Trip Packing List and additional info.
Many Camp Mini-Yo-We alumni consider the Northwoods program to be their ultimate Camp experience. Take the challenge!
